balmoral passengersVolunteers - an essential role

Volunteers are needed in a wide variety of roles to keep MV BALMORAL operating. Many of these roles are seasonal – so in summer we need people wherever the ship is sailing but in winter much of the work is concentrated around her winter berth in Bristol – and some of the organising jobs can be done working from home.

In winter regular working parties meet on board for engineering maintenance, cleaning and painting the ship – as well as taking on specific projects. Outside the sailing season there are also events held on board and alongside MV BALMORAL where volunteers may assist.

In summer the main use of volunteers is at the piers and harbours from which MV BALMORAL sails – meeting and greeting passengers. Many of our volunteers who are sailing will help with selling raffle tickets – the ship's newspaper BALMORAL GAZETTE or guides to the coasts around which we are sailing. Our on-board Commentators are also volunteers, as are the on-board shopkeepers.

MV BALMORAL's crew are all qualified seafarers but there are some opportunities for professionals wishing to offer to keep up their sea time and relieve our regular crew on a short term basis.

One of the challenges of operating around the coasts is making people aware beforehand that MV BALMORAL is coming and to enthuse them enough to want to come and sail. Volunteers who can share the message in their own areas and distribute publicity materials ahead of the ship's visits have a key role to play.

Why should I volunteer?

As a volunteer you are part of a team and we want you to enjoy the experience – meeting other like-minded people and perhaps even learning new skills. We ask you to be realistic about what you volunteer for and how much time you offer. Many of our volunteer roles involve physical activity – sometimes outside – so we don't want you to committ to more than you can deliver. As we are assisting an operation which has to comply with many and complex regulations to be allowed to carry passengers we need volunteers who can work to high standards and we are more than happy to help new volunteers get up to speed.
