Introduction
2009 marks the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the
Paddle Steamer Preservation Society...
Since
its foundation by Professor Alan Robinson in November 1959,
the Society has grown to become the most successful operator
of paddle and pleasure steamers in the UK as well as one
of the largest UK maritime enthusiast groups.
The past fifty
years has witnessed the sad withdrawal of well-loved steamers
such as Cardiff Queen, Caledonia, Royal
Daffodil, Ryde, Consul and Medway Queen.
But, the story is also one of great success as the preservation
and operation of the Waverley, Balmoral and
Kingswear Castle has ensured that three famous and
well-loved steamers have survived for a new generation to
enjoy.
The online exhibitions and other articles below celebrate
the past fifty years seen through unique photographs, cine
film, recordings and ephemera. They also look forward with
great enthusiasm to the next 50 years of the PSPS and the
continued operation of the Waverley, Balmoral
and Kingswear Castle well into the 21st century!
